When both ropes have been woven into one figure 8 knot, carefully compress and tighten the composite knot into the characteristic figure 8 shape. For the greatest strength, make sure the standing part of both ropes forms the outer bight at both ends of the knot.

FISHERMAN’S KNOT

A SIMPLE KNOT FOR JOINING TWO ROPES OR CORDS OF SIMILAR DIAMETER

You don’t have to be a fisherman to use this knot. But because it works very well in lines of very small diameter, such as fishing line, it is popular with people who fish. That’s why it’s called a fisherman’s knot, as you probably guessed. It’s simple and easy to tie. This knot combines two overhand knots that jam against each other when you pull on the two ropes being tied together. And it unties fairly easily, even after being weighted, but it can bind up and be hard to untie if it gets jerked tight suddenly. The knot works best in ropes of similar thickness and, therefore, does a fine job of tying two ends of the same rope or cord together. It’s a perfect knot for tying a short piece of rope into a permanent loop.
